summer film school application essay
feedback greatly appreciated :D

I saw Apollo 13 when I was nine years old. I was convinced I wanted to be an astronaut. At ten, I watched All The President’s Men. I was positive I wanted to be a reporter. When I was eleven, I saw Seabiscut, and decided I wanted to be a jockey. It wasn’t until age twelve, when I saw the behind the scenes features of Jaws with Steven Spielberg, that I realized I didn’t want to be a astronaut, or a reporter, or any of those other things. I realized that I wanted to be a filmmaker.
A filmmaker has the power to provide people with different views and opinions, vast windows into unknown worlds. A proficient one can completely mold a viewer’s conceptions about a subject with their work. The filmmaker provides society not only with a different perspective, but also with the needed escape. Since the Great Depression, the silver screen has served as a window into another world, a world with no troubles and happy endings.
I hope that the art of film will take on a very important role in my life. To me, being a filmmaker is so much more than telling stories. Its making people feel things. It’s changing people’s minds; changing their points of view, giving them a release from the day to day drudgery of life. It’s my passion, my dream, everything I want to be. I want to spend each day on set, and each night reviewing scripts. I want to influence people with the films I make. I want something I’ve done to make them laugh, make them cry, make them change the way they think, even if it’s just for a day.
